Flow chemistry is when a chemical reaction is run in a stream by combining various reactants continuously to create chemical reactions. These reactions utilize devices such as pumps to move reactants into reactors where they contact each other. The adoption of flow chemistry into the creation of complex organic compounds and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (hereafter as APIs) have allowed tedious and often hazardous batch reactions to become significantly more efficient. This innovative technology also provides chemists with precise control of reaction parameters such as temperature, time, mixing and volume added. These factors allow for better impurity control and product yield. This research paper will provide a detailed analysis of the currently available continuous flow technologies and provide an overview of enabling technologies in this field of research, such as the integration of photochemistry, electrochemistry and artificial intelligence in flow chemistry reactions.
