Since the 1980s, some Chinese writers have been fascinated by the trend of “New Historicism” have applied it to their novel writing, creating a distinctive literary realm. Instead of narrating history itself, they try to reveal the deep-seated desires and dilemmas of human nature, which in a way dissolves the solemnity of history. Taking Su Tong’s My Life as Emperor as an example, this article analyzes the characters’ living conditions from the aspects of human attitudes, spiritual worlds and identities, and examines the degeneration and redemption of human nature, so as to explore how the texts deconstructs the solemnity of history and reflect on its unique significance.
