Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of social practice as the analytical framework, this study focuses on the translator habitus exhibited by Legge, a renowned British sinologist and missionary. Taking his English translation of Confucian Analects as a case study, it investigates the habitual characteristics formed through Legge’s education, work, and social experiences. This paper aims to delve into how these translation tendencies influence his work and to uncover the fundamental drivers behind his successful translation of Chinese classics. It seeks to offer novel research perspectives and references for the English translation of Chinese scholarly works.
