Research on the influence of the information cocoon effect on college students’ information literacy

Abstract

This study explores the information cocoon effect, a phenomenon that confines individuals within personalized information bubbles, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives. College students, heavily reliant on digital media for information, are particularly vulnerable. The paper outlines the causes, characteristics, and implications of the information cocoon effect, then focuses on its impact on college students' information literacy, specifically their abilities to evaluate sources, synthesize information, and make informed decisions. To address these concerns, the study reviews coping strategies, including educational interventions, technological solutions, and personal development techniques. Results suggest a multifaceted approach combining formal education, technology, and self-reflection is most effective in enhancing information literacy among college students in the digital age, which contributes to offer practical insights for educators, policymakers, and students.
