Strategic Development and Challenges in Global City Regions: A Case Analysis of the Greater Tokyo Region

This paper critically examined the notion of the global city region (GCR) through the lens of the Greater Tokyo Region (GTR), demonstrating how GTR exemplified one of the most representative GCRs globally. It analyzed the strategic, growth across different areas within a global city region, using the GTR as a case study. The study explored the impacts of globalization on the economic and industrial framework of the GTR, along with its evolving social and cultural aspects, and shifts in policy, highlighting how these processes influenced the region's vitality and spatial structure. Additionally, the paper addressed the challenges and issues faced by GTR amidst globalization, including economic imbalances, population migration, and infrastructure strains. The analysis revealed that while GTR benefited significantly from its global connections, it also encountered critical disruptions, such as those caused by unilateral protectionism and the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper underscored the need for effective strategies to manage these challenges and sustain the region's role as a leading global city in an increasingly interconnected world.
