In the context of "Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality", digital technologies, such as Internet, is now playing an increasingly prominent role in the economic and social development, serving as an engine in the green transformation and growth of the economy. Based on a two-way fixed effect model (TWFEM), this study researches the impact of Internet development (ID) on green economic growth (GEG), utilizing panel data for 30 Chinese provinces from 2006 to 2020. This study draws the following five main conclusions. Firstly, ID has a significant contribution to GEG in China. Secondly, compared to the central and western regions of China, the impact of ID on GEG is stronger in the east. Thirdly, the positive impact of ID on GEG was stronger after the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (NCCPC) in 2012. Fourthly, ID promotes China's GEG mainly through promoting economic growth and improving pollution control. Fifthly, government intervention weakens the impact mechanism, while market development enhances it. After a series of robustness tests, the above findings remain valid, boosting important implications for furthering the coordinated development of the digital and green economies.
