Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) games have become influential platforms where Gen Z players engage not only in immersive play but also in emotionally charged spending. Unlike traditional games, these environments integrate monetization strategies directly into gameplay structures, making consumption an inseparable part of the virtual experience. The present study examines the impact of monetization strategies in VR games on the purchasing behavior of Gen Z consumers, with a particular focus on how emotional, social, and symbolic incentives integrated into gameplay. This paper adopts a qualitative case-based approach and draws upon relevant theories of digital consumer behavior. Through case studies of Love and Deep space, the study analyzes how specific monetization mechanisms influence user behavior, drawing on theories of emotional consumption and digital engagement. Combining case analysis and digital insights, this study explored how game-play structures mediate emotional consumption under modern monetization models. Besides, this study identifies how commercialism and interactive design are combined in virtual environments, which raises leading questions about ethical game development and marketing practices targeting young people. By analyzing these trends, the research contributes to a generous discussion on digital consumer autonomy and the ethics of emotional commercialization.
