Social media has become an indispensable tool in modern sports communication, profoundly transforming how athletes engage with their global audience. Focusing on the prominent case of Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world’s most-followed athletes across platforms, this paper adopts a case paper approach to explore how social media enhances fan interaction, strengthens personal branding, and shapes public perception. The analysis highlights that social media offers athletes a powerful channel to cultivate authenticity and foster a sense of community, thereby significantly boosting their commercial brand value and deepening fan loyalty through direct and continuous engagement. However, these advantages are coupled with considerable challenges, including heightened vulnerabilities in privacy management, the potential spread of misinformation, and intensified public scrutiny that can lead to reputational risks. In response to these dual aspects, this paper proposes strategic guidelines for athletes and their management teams to optimize social media usage—emphasizing content consistency, active engagement techniques, and crisis communication protocols. Furthermore, the paper identifies emerging trends and suggests directions for future research, particularly regarding the impact of new digital platforms, the evolution of parasocial relationships, and the long-term effects of social media on athletes’ mental health and career sustainability. This research contributes to a nuanced understanding of social media’s role in sports communication, illustrating its capacity to create opportunities as well as complexities in the digital age.
