The Impact of Supply Chain Digitization on Operational Efficiency: Pathways, Evidence, and Strategies

In the current era of frequent global disruptions, factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical uncertainties have significantly exacerbated the vulnerability of supply chain systems, prompting companies to urgently seek systematic means to improve operational efficiency. Supply chain digitalization has thus become a core strategic option, which is not only about technological upgrading but also reflects a profound restructuring of the overall operational structure. This paper explores how digitalization can drive efficiency improvements through three key pathways: data integration and visualization, process automation and intelligence, and the construction of cross-entity collaboration platforms. Based on a review of existing theories and empirical findings, the paper provides a comprehensive interpretation of practices in different industries, with a particular focus on Walmart's digital transformation experience. Research indicates that supply chain digitalization can significantly shorten delivery cycles, improve inventory turnover rates, and enhance customer satisfaction. Its underlying mechanism lies in strengthening the flexibility, transparency, and resilience of the supply chain. However, digitalization practices also face challenges such as insufficient organizational adaptability, the absence of data governance systems, and limitations in scaling up. Based on this, this paper proposes optimization strategies tailored to different enterprise scales, emphasizing the importance of human capital development and the construction of a secure collaborative ecosystem. Overall, supply chain digitalization is not simply the application of technology, but a comprehensive transformation of technology, organization, and governance.
