Abstract

This exploratory case study investigates the role of school environments in fostering resilience among students in a disadvantaged region of Nepal. Specifically, it examines the experiences of volunteer teachers who taught at Tapobhumi School, a rural school in Kathmandu, where students face significant socio-economic and infrastructural challenges. Through thematic analysis of interviews with three volunteer teachers, the study explores how physical, relational, and institutional aspects of the school environment contribute to or hinder student resilience. The findings reveal that while the inadequate infrastructure, including poor sanitation facilities, negatively impacts student well-being, positive relationships within the school community and limited resources such as the playground and activity rooms provide crucial support. The study highlights the importance of school environments in shaping resilience and offers practical suggestions for improving infrastructure and expanding volunteer programs.
