This paper aims to explore the evolution characteristics of the consumption structure and the factors influencing the consumption upgrade among urban and rural residents in Chinese provinces. Based on interprovincial data of urban and rural residents' consumption, the paper analyzes the demand elasticity of eight major types of consumption and examines the impact of urbanization rate and elderly dependency ratio on consumption upgrade. The study finds that the urbanization rate is a key factor in promoting the growth of consumption expenditure. This paper provides empirical evidence for understanding the changes in the consumption structure of urban and rural residents in China and offers references for formulating relevant policies.
