Abstract

This analysis investigates the pioneering compositional techniques in Claude Debussy's early piano masterpiece, Arabesques No. 1. A meticulous examination of the score and performance practices reveals how the departure from functional harmony—through the use of chromatic scales, parallel chords, and post-notational pedaling—generates innovative tonal colors and spatial depth. The study also illuminates how the work's non-rectified phrasing mirrors the fluidity of its namesake artistic style. These elements converge in the dissolution of musical teleology, forging an impressionistic aesthetic of ambiguity and transformation. As a seminal work, Arabesques No. 1 not only foreshadowed Debussy's unique trajectory but also profoundly influenced the course of modern music.
