As an emerging interdisciplinary field, synthetic biology is having a profound impact on the cosmetics industry. This study aims to systematically explore the applications and effects of this approach in the production of cosmetic active ingredients. Genetic engineering and the reconstruction of microbial cell factories enable the efficient and sustainable production of natural active compounds with high purity and stability. Besides, synthetic biology strategies enable the sustainable and scalable production of natural colourants and their non-natural derivatives, offering green and innovative solutions for the cosmetics and personal-care industries. This essay begins by presenting the definition and general principles of synthetic biology. Next, it examines its current applications and performance advantages within the cosmetics sector. Finally, it considers the challenges brought by existing approaches. The final goal is to create practical references and insights for the innovative construction of the industry.
