Within the intricate regulatory network of the female reproductive system, growth factors secreted by oocytes orchestrate follicular development through sophisticated paracrine signaling mechanisms. Among these factors, the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily serves as a central regulatory hub, playing a pivotal role in this process. Growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF-9), an essential member of the TGF-β superfamily, possesses multifaceted and indispensable biological functions. It not only finely regulates cellular proliferation and differentiation but also participates extensively in the entire course of oocyte growth and maturation, making it a crucial determinant for normal oocyte development. This review focuses on the key gene GDF-9, aiming to provide a comprehensive and in-depth overview of its fundamental characteristics and molecular structure, with particular emphasis on its dynamic expression patterns within ovarian tissues. Furthermore, we explore the complex regulatory mechanisms and specific functions of GDF-9 during the critical process of in vitro oocyte maturation (IVM), in order to offer a more systematic and insightful theoretical foundation and practical reference for research in female reproductive health.
