In this work, a systematic review was conducted to evaluate the association between age and hypertension prevalence among adult residents in China. By searching databases including CNKI, Wanfang Medical Database, and VIP from January 2001 to December 2016, cross-sectional studies on hypertension prevalence in Chinese adults were retrieved. After screening literature according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracting data, and assessing quality, a total of 10 studies with a combined sample size of 99,470 individuals were included. Meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3 software revealed that the hypertension prevalence in the group aged <45 years was significantly lower than that in middle-aged and elderly groups, with the highest prevalence observed in the group aged >65 years. Statistically significant differences in prevalence rates were noted among different age groups (subgroup test χ²=182.29, P<0.00001), with a prevalence difference of 0.27 (95% CI: 0.21-0.32) between the <45 years and >65 years groups. This study highlights that hypertension prevalence among adult residents in China increases significantly with age, indicating that the elderly population represents a key focus for hypertension prevention and control efforts. Stratified intervention strategies tailored to different age groups are warranted to address this public health challenge effectively.
