In the current context of global efforts towards carbon neutrality, the reduction of carbon emissions has emerged as a prevalent and pressing trend. Governments worldwide are vigorously investing in the development of low-carbon technologies to address the urgent need for sustainability. This article delves into the intricate relationship between urban innovation capabilities and the intensity of carbon emissions within cities. The results unequivocally reveal a direct and positive correlation, highlighting that bolstering urban innovation capabilities leads to a notable reduction in urban carbon emission intensity. Governments across nations can achieve their carbon emissions reduction targets by prioritizing technological innovation and extending support to technology-driven enterprises. Consequently, each country should tailor its urban innovation development plans to its unique developmental stage. Elevating technological innovation levels and harnessing the scale effect of cities will create a synergy where governments, businesses, and individuals collectively promote innovation. This holistic approach is poised to further diminish carbon emission intensity and accelerate the realization of ambitious carbon emission reduction objectives.
