Nanodrugs offer a means of delivering drugs that can enhance their bioavailability. However, the practical application of nanomedicines is hindered by the use of carrier materials in their construction, which can make them potentially toxic. Carrier-free nanomaterials are currently receiving significant attention due to their simple composition, high drug loading capacity, and low toxicity, making them widely used in medical applications. This paper outlines the self-assembly mechanism of carrierless nanomaterials, details their applications in antitumour, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant applications, and finally briefly discusses the development of carrierless nanomaterials.
