Abstract

Mud shale, a sedimentary rock rich in minerals, organic matter, and clay, has gained attention as a potential soil reconstitution material. With increasing concerns about global soil degradation—particularly in the form of erosion, salinization, and nutrient depletion—the search for effective and sustainable soil amendments has intensified. This paper reviews the feasibility of using mud shale for soil restoration by exploring its composition, properties, and potential impact on soil health. The study examines laboratory and field studies that investigate the physical and chemical improvements of soils treated with mud shale. Results from these studies suggest that mud shale can enhance water retention, nutrient availability, and soil structure, especially in degraded or arid soils. Comparative analysis with other soil amendments highlights the potential advantages of mud shale in terms of cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and sustainability. Furthermore, the environmental impact and scalability of using mud shale are also considered, emphasizing its potential as a viable material for large-scale soil reconstitution. This review concludes that while challenges remain, particularly in terms of long-term impacts and economic feasibility, mud shale offers promising potential for improving soil health and combating soil degradation worldwide.
