Abstract

Young Skins is a collection of short stories written by Irish writer Colin Barrett published in 2013 which has won the Frank O 'Connor International Short Story Award, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and the Guardian First Novel Award. Calm with Horses is the only novellas in Young Skins. While ethical literary criticism offers a fresh literary perspective on literature works which are published after economic trauma, since its publication, there have been few researches both at home and abroad approaching to Calm with Horses from the perspective of ethical literary. For the purpose of exploring the ethical theme and the character Arm in Calm with Horses, this paper looks from the perspective of ethical literary criticism into the contradictions between the external macro-environment and micro-environment faced by the main character Arm in the aftermath of the economic crisis in Ireland, focusing on the analysis of the ethical environment behind the character Arm, his ethical choice under the ethical dilemma and the breakthrough of the ethical dilemma
