Abstract

The level of urbanization has become one of the measurements of the comprehensive strength of a country. While China is on the road to urbanization, the opposite process is taking place in Northeast China, abolishing some sub-districts and establishing towns. This paper focuses on Yichun, a city in Northeast China, to analyze the reasons and effects of the policy based on the Yichun Government Statistical Bulletin. The counter urbanization happening in Yichun is caused by population loss and economic decline due to over-dependence on forestry resources. Recommendations for the further development policy are provided at the end. Current research focuses on the urbanization process and the type of urbanization in Northeast China. There is not much research on the counter urbanization policy set in Northeast China.
