Abstract

The novels of Hardy are full of fatalism, which is particularly prominent in his book Tess of the D’Urbervilles. However, although the film adaptation of Roman Polanski’s Tess has complied with the original, the theme of fatalism is reduced to a certain extent. Therefore, this paper intends to study Polanski’s Tess from the perspective of film narration, focusing on two aspects of character reconstruction and plot setting, with examples to discuss and analyze the weakening of fatalism theme in Polanski’s Tess. This study is helpful to explore the reasons and significance of Polanski’s weakening of fatalism and help readers to understand and appreciate the artistic charm of Hardy’s novels. It provides some reference significance for learners how to make better use of literature to adapt films to study foreign works and advocate their own discriminative thinking.
