Abstract

The domestication and foreignization were proposed by an Italian-American translation theorist Lawrence Venuti in The Translator’s Invisibility – A History of Translation in 1995. He advocated resistance translation and opposed the invisibility of translators and the translation strategies he posed played a positive role in cross-cultural communication. This paper will review the formation and development process of Venuti's translation theory and analyze the differences and limitations between domestication and foreignization as well as the application of the two strategies in literary translation, hoping can provide some reference for literary translation.
