Abstract

From the perspective of embodied-cognitive translatology, this paper conducts a comparative study on different English versions of Brush Talks From Dream Brook. Embodied-cognitive translatology emphasizes the interactive relationship among experience, cognition and linguistic expression in the translation process, holding that translation is not only the transformation of linguistic signs, but also the experience and re-cognition of the original content and cultural background. This paper selects two representative English versions of Brush Talks From Dream Brook and makes a comparative analysis from three levels: lexicon, sentence and discourse, aiming to explore the differences in translators’ experience and cognition of the source text in the translation process and how these differences affect the accuracy and fluency of the translations. The study finds that different translators adopt different translation strategies when dealing with scientific and technological terms, sentence structures and culture-specific items, which reflect the translators’ cognitive characteristics and translation purposes to a certain extent. The research results of this paper help to deepen the understanding of the English translation of Brush Talks From Dream Brook and provide reference for the future English translation of Chinese classics.
