Abstract

This paper will study the screen representations of East Asian diaspora communities in transnational cinema and explore how displaced filmmakers and their works address the conflict among cultural identity, national origin, and the requirements of host countries. Based on the foundation provided by diaspora studies and transnational film scholarship, this paper will explore how cinematic language constructs, questions and sometimes overturn established stereotypes of East Asian subjects in Western-produced and co-produced films. Over time, the type of representation in early Hollywood films has moved away from stereotypes and now carries an accent that reflects the life experience of displacement. The structure of transnational production and its effect on the narrative agency and visual self-expression of East Asian diasporic filmmakers have also been studied. Contemporary transnational cinema is increasingly offering a platform for counter-hegemonic representation, but structural inequalities in the global film industry continue to restrict the scope of permissible diasporic imaginaries on screen.
