Abstract

This article focuses on the performance of the Macao Special Administrative Region in the Programme for International Student Assessment 2022 (PISA 2022) and examines its implications for education curriculum reform. The PISA programme provides an important reference for global education policy by assessing the reading, maths and science literacy of 15-year-old students. Macau's performance exceeds the OECD average in maths and science, but there is still room for improvement in reading. The strengths of the Macao education system were analysed, such as the sustained investment and achievements in the teaching of mathematics and the remarkable progress in science education. At the same time, the challenges of educational equity are pointed out, especially in terms of the impact of socio-economic status on students' performance. The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the education system has also prompted the need for the Macao education system to integrate digital technologies and innovative teaching methods more effectively. By comparing the education system with that of Singapore, the East Asian region and some European countries, this paper proposes strategies for Macao to enhance the quality of education and promote the all-round development of students. Recommendations include strengthening STEM education, enhancing teacher professional development, improving educational equity, and integrating technology and continuing education. The impact of PISA 2022 on Macau's education system is summarised and directions for future education reforms are proposed to ensure that Macau remains a leader in the global education arena and provides better educational opportunities and resources for students.
