Abstract

As reforms in talent development within higher education continue to advance, developing students’ capacity for self-directed development is of great significance for stimulating their initiative in learning, improving the quality of talent development, and cultivating high-caliber application-oriented professionals. At present, higher education institutions are continuously expanding the scope for student autonomy through reform, yet students’ capacity for self-directed development has not improved correspondingly. Therefore, higher education institutions should respond to students’ actual developmental needs, update existing teaching methods, improve approaches to student development, and systematically advance the development of students’ capacity for self-directed development. Beginning with an examination of the specific meaning of self-directed development, this paper constructs a three-dimensional analytical framework comprising “agentic willingness–capacity for action–supportive conditions” and explains the significance of developing students’ capacity for self-directed development. It then discusses four categories of problems in current capacity-development practices at higher education institutions and the mechanisms underlying their emergence. Finally, in light of current practices, it proposes four optimization strategies: agency activation, self-directed learning design, sustained support, and collaborative empowerment. Conducting research in this area effectively is of great significance for improving the quality of talent development.
