Abstract

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) now serves as a guiding framework for higher education reform and for program accreditation in China. By placing students at the center, fixing attention on demonstrable outcomes, and committing to continuous improvement, it has changed the way universities conceive of talent cultivation and given them reason to take co-curricular education more seriously. Academic salons belong squarely in that co-curriculum: they pair scholarly seriousness with open, give-and-take discussion and sit somewhere between the classroom and the research group. Read through the lens of OBE, their educational role comes into focus. This paper argues that what salons do maps onto four OBE concerns — building knowledge, developing core competencies, forming academic literacy, and supporting each student's individual growth — and that five familiar weaknesses keep them from delivering: aims that never connect to intended outcomes, passive students, lopsided content, disjointed management, and thin institutional backing. On that basis the paper sets out a series of practical reforms and offers universities both a way of thinking about the problem and something concrete to do about it as they try to strengthen co-curricular and collaborative education.
